Overview
In order to use the instructions presented here, though possibly applicable in general terms, it is necessary for you to have fonts and keyboard drivers installed from BRAMA.
To Configure Eudora Lite
One of the most popular email programs available on the Internet is known as Eudora produced by Qualcomm. It is available both in basic though elegant freeware versions on the Internet (Eudora Lite) as well as highly versatile and robust commercial versions (Eudora Pro). On the Internet, it is available in several releases; these include: Eudora 3.0.1 -- Eudora 3.0.5
Each version can be run on Windows 3.1, 95, or NT. Documentation covering installation and usage for any of the Eudora 3.0.x versions is available in Adobe PDF format.

In order to view and write email in Ukrainian in Eudora Lite it is necessary to first select the appropriate Screen Font; in order to print email in Ukrainian you also have to select the appropriate Print Font.
For versions 1.4.4, 1.5.2, and 1.5.4 of Eudora Lite, to select the proper fonts it is necessary to:

  1. From the drop menus click Special, then
  2. click Settings, then
  3. in the Category section find and click Fonts & Display
  4. To change the screen font click on the Screen Font button. A Fonts dialog box appears.
  5. select either ER Kurier KOI-8; for size it is recommended to select a number between 9 and 12, depending on your preference. Click Ok to exit the dialog box
  6. in the Category section find and click Fonts & Display
  7. To change the print font click on the Print Font button. A Fonts dialog box appears.
  8. select either ER Kurier KOI-8; for size it is recommended to select a number between 9 and 12, depending on your preference. Click Ok to exit the dialog box
  9. Click Ok to exit the Settings dialog box

For any versions of Eudora Lite 3.0.x, to select the proper fonts it is necessary to:

  1. From the drop menus click Tools, then
  2. click Options, then
  3. in the Category section find and click Fonts & Display
To write in Ukrainian, please use one of the keyboard drivers recommended for your operating environment. Please note: most email on the Internet uses KOI8 encoding. However, on some occasions there are individuals who use CP1251. In cases like this simply repeat the above instructions replacing ER Kurier KOI-8 with ER Kurier 1251.

To Configure AOL Email
AOL on Windows 3.1 systems
In AOL fonts are hard-coded and cannot be changed. Two options are available.
  1. Starting with AOL version 3.0.1, AOL introduces a new feature described as TCP/IP Tunnelling which allows you to run any TCP/IP application ( Netscape,Eudora) while connected to AOL. For more information, go to AOL's WWW site.
  2. Another possible way to read/write in Ukrainian on AOL is to use a "workaround" (which for some might be a bit long and unpleasant).
    1. Start MS-WRITE, MS-WORD or any other editor of your preference and select ER Kurier KOI-8 as your font choice.
    2. Start the AOL browser and get to your mail
    3. for each message that you assume is in Ukrainian (it will be illegible)
      1. Click on the message text to switch to that window
      2. Select all the text in the window (Ctrl+a)
      3. Copy selected text to the clipboard (Ctrl+c)
      4. Switch to your editor (Alt+Tab, or Alt+Esc, or Ctrl+Esc)
      5. Paste the text from the clipboard (Ctrl+v)
      6. If you still don't have it in Cyrillics - select all (Ctrl+a) of the text and select ER Kurier KOI-8 as your font choice.

    4. To reply in Ukrainian, use your editor along with ER Fonts and an appropriate keyboard driver to type your answer, then select (Ctrl+a), copy to clipboard (Ctrl+c), and paste (Ctrl+v) into AOL's "answer" window (where it should appear illegible) and send it.

These pages in their conception owe a great deal to the work of
Matvey Palchuk's Russification of Macintosh and
Zenon Feszczak's Ukrainianization of Macintosh pages.
Much thanks to them.
