Diacritics and other characters above ASCII 128

Introduction

The following is provided here at BRAMA-Ukrainian Gateway for those who are curious about the mappings of the various prevalent computer encodings for the Cyrillic alphabet. It (probably) is confusing as it is enlightening.

On computing systems, letters, characters and simple control functions (such as line feeds and tabs) are generally assigned any one of 256 numbers (or positions). Positions 0 through 127 are primarily used for Latin-derived characters (those letters used in English) and is known as ASCII (American Standard Code for Information Interchange).

Letters with diacritics (such as those used in French) and other characters are mapped to positions 128 through 255. In addition, most encodings for various foreign languages which use non Latin-derived alphabets, including for Cyrillic, are mapped to this range.

Various encodings with cryptic names have come into use for Cyrillic over the last twenty years; no single one prevails over the others. Rather, each is used in a particular realm of computing. There is an encoding which prevails for Internet email and Usenet postings (KOI8), another is used on DOS-based systems (CP866), Macintosh systems tend to use what is know as Apple Standard Cyrillic; Windows systems favor CP1251, and mainframe systems are beginning to use ISO 8859-5.

A further confusing factor is that there are no strong compelling system-specific reasons for using one encoding over another in a computing realm. In other words, you can use KOI8 or CP1251 encodings for Internet email and any other number other computing applications. Encoding usage is governed more by convention than system concerns.

The tables which follow are compiled for those who might be interested in these various encodings; they show the accompanying position to the various Cyrillic letters and diacritics.
