BRAMA, October 13, 2000, 3:00pm EDT
Encyclopedia of Ukraine. University of Toronto Press Inc., 1993; Vol.5, p. 349. http://www.utoronto.ca/encyukr/euhm2.html
Ukrainian American Coordinating Council An umbrella organization of Ukrainian civic, cultural, and political associations in the United States, formed on 15 May 1983 by the Committee for Law and Order in the Ukrainian Congress Committee of America (UKKA). The Committee for Law and Order was set up by the 27 organizations that walked out at the 13th Congress of Ukrainian Americans in Philadelphia (10-12 October 1980) in protest over what was regarded as an illegal seizure of power in the UKKA by the organizations of the Ukrainian Liberation Front. When negotiations with the new executive of the UKKA to rectify the statutory and procedural violations perpetrated at the 13th Congress broke down, the Committee for Law and Order set up the UAKR to continue the tradition of the pre-13th Congress UKKA. This decision and the council's statute were approved by member organizations on 1 October 1983. UAKR was admitted to the World Congress of Free Ukrainians in November 1983. At the First Convention of the UAKR, held in Philadelphia on 1 October 1985, delegates of 49 national organizations and 22 branches elected a new executive with J. Flis as president. |
Read an opinion piece by one recent immigrant who is active in the Ukrainian community in New York: Кого і що репрезентує УККА? (Koho i shcho reprezentuye UCCA?). - 10/13/00, BRAMA A writer from Ukraine whose unemployed mother is living in Chicago posted this plaintive note to Brama's Nova Khvylia Bulletin Board: “Панове, може хтось чув, чи не може дiаспора допомогти з роботою i взагалi чи існує якась підтримка діаспори для українців ‘новоi хвилi’?” (Gentlemen, has anyone heard if the Diaspora can help [my mother] with a job, and in general, does any kind of Diasporan assistance exist for 4th wave Ukrainians?) |
