George W. makes history: view from the deck of a Tall Ship
-- Digital photos contributed by George Wislocki
New York - George Wislocki believes he has witnessed a truly historic event. He took part in OpSail 2000, sailing up the Hudson River on a Ukrainian-built and manned Tall Ship (the Bat'kivshchyna) to celebrate American Independence Day. They passed by the Statue of Liberty, sailed along Manhattan's west side with the World Trade Center looming in the horizon, and reached the George Washington Bridge before turning back to dock at the pier next to the floating Intrepid Museum. And if that wasn't enough, the President of the United States, Bill Clinton, was nearby on the aircraft carrier USS JFK sharing a place on the Hudson River with the Tall Ships. How can George not feel that this was an important and memorable day? He'll have stories to tell for many years to come about his experiences on July 4, 2000.
"Everyone - the crew and their families, the OpSail 2000 staff, the reporters and photographers and all the guests, everyone was very friendly, talkative and in an excited mood. Best of all - I had fun." George is especially grateful to those who helped organize the event, in particular Taras Szczur, one of the OpSail liaisons for the Batkivshchyna. He emphasized that he felt completely safe while in the capable hands of the Batkivshchyna's crew. After all, if the small schooner's captain and crew so deftly resolved the many difficulties encountered on their way to these shores from Ukraine, they could certainly handle a day trip up the Hudson.
