The New York Bandura Ensemble has invited Ukrainian-Canadian singer Alexis Kochan to lead an intensive one day Ukrainian Folk Singing workshop Saturday May 8. The workshop will run from 1pm to 8pm at St. George’s Ukrainian Catholic School in New York’s East Village, with registration beginning at noon. The fee for the whole-day event is $25.

Workshop participants will have a unique opportunity to explore the depth and beauty of Ukrainian vocal traditions with Ms. Kochan and her long time collaborator, NYBE Artistic Director Julian Kytasty. Genres and styles to be covered range from pre-Christian ritual songs and ancient chant to folk polyphony from Central Ukraine and songs collected by Mr. Kytasty in Ukrainian Cossack villages in the Kuban. Some workshop sessions will divide into separate men’s and women’s groups to focus on appropriate vocal style and repertoire.

Alexis Kochan is known in the US and Canada as one of today’s leading interpreters of Ukrainian folk song. Her three recordings on her own Olesia label - Czarivna, Paris to Kiev, and Paris to Kyiv: Variances - have broken into the mainstream in Canada, and have been played frequently nationwide on CBC radio.

The workshop will be the final event of an east coast tour that will also see Ms. Kochan and Mr. Kytasty, along with the musicians of their Paris to Kyiv ensemble, perform concerts on April 29 in Washington DC at the invitation of TWG, and on May 1 in Symphony Space in New York at the invitation of the prestigious World Music Institute concert series. A workshop with Hartford’s Yevshan choir is also in the works.

The May 8 workshop is sponsored by the New York Bandura Ensemble, whose programs are made possible in part by a grant from the New York State Council on the Arts, a State agency.
