Chornobyl photo exhibit launches series of events commemorating 20th anniversary of nuclear accident
On Sunday March 12, 2006, the exhibit titled "Chornobyl' + 20…This is our land - We still live here" featuring the photographs of Myron Stachiw and Serhiy Marchenko opened at the Ukrainian Museum in New York. Visitors to this exhibition have an opportunity to acquaint themselves with the contaminated territory left by the catastrophe and the documented chapters of life that remain there.
The main thrust of the collection of images is the memory of the tragic legacy of Chornobyl, the numerous losses and the suffering of thousands upon thousands of Ukrainians, as emphasized by Ambassador Valeriy Kuchinsky, Permanent Mission of Ukraine to the United Nations, in his address to the guests at the opening.
This exhibit launches a series of events taking place this year in commemoration of the 20th anniversary of the Chornobyl disaster. During "Chornobyl Week" at the UN, a special memorial session of the UN General Assembly will take place on 28 April with the participation of Secretary General Kofi Annan, UN General Committee President Jan Eliasson, as well as high level representatives of member nations, international organizations and foundations.
In addition, a charitable bazaar benefitting the victims of Chornobyl and the World Information Transfer's 15th Annual Conference on Health and Environment titled "Living with radiation in the modern world…Commemorating Chornobyl - Remembering Hiroshima/Nagasaki" will take place at the end of April.
Ukrainian diplomats and area Ukrainian community members joined forces in preparation for the various Chornobyl commemorations. Mutual plans and coordination of events were given special attention during recently held consultations under the leadership of Ambassador Kuchinsky.

12 березня у приміщенні Українського музею міста Нью-Йорка відкрилася виставка робіт відомого українського фотомитця Сергія Марченка, присвячена двадцятій річниці Чорнобильської катастрофи. Впродовж майже двох місяців відвідувачі експозиції матимуть нагоду ознайомитися із закарбованим у фотографіях минулим та сьогоденням уражених територій, а також побачити документальні стрічки про життя та спогади пересічних ліквідаторів та мешканців забруднених територій.
Основним посланням виставки є спомин трагічної спадщини Чорнобиля, численних втрат та страждань тисяч і тисяч українців, - наголосив у своєму вступному слові до гостей виставки Постійний представник України при ООН Валерій Кучинський.
Нинішня експозиція стала першою з низки Чорнобильських заходів, які відбудуться у Нью-Йорку з нагоди вшанування двадцятої річниці катастрофи. В рамках "Чорнобильського" тижня в Об'єднаних Націях ключовою буде спеціальна пам'ятна сесія Генеральної Асамблеї ООН, яка відбудеться 28 квітня ц.р. за участю Генерального секретаря ООН К.Аннана, Голови Генасамблеї Я.Еліассона, Адміністратора програми розвитку ООН К.Дервіша, а також високих представників країн-членів та численних міжнародних організацій і фондів.
Крім цього, наприкінці квітня планується проведення благодійного базару та 15-ї Міжнародної науково-практичної конференції "Здоров'я та довкілля", присвяченої вивченню медичних наслідків катастрофи.
Українські дипломати та місцева громада об'єднали зусилля з підготовки до проведення Чорнобильських меморіальних заходів. Спільні плани та координація дій були в центрі уваги під час погоджувальної наради, яка відбулася цими днями під головуванням Постійного представника України при ООН В.Кучинського.
