Perspectives on Ukrainian culture and art
By Natalie Gawdiak
As a part of the curriculum at St. Andrew's Episcopal School at 8804 Postoak Road in Potomac, Maryland, a month-long art exhibit featuring a different culture each year is put on display under the auspices of a grant entitled the Roshan Cultural Heritage Series. Thanks to the suggestion of one of its students of Ukrainian heritage, this year's exhibit featured Ukraine. The opening reception on February 9th had the support of the Ukrainian Embassy and the Cultural Fund of the Washington Group of Ukrainian Professionals (TWG). The exhibit will be on display through February 28.
The works feature photos by Peter Fedynsky; paintings and mixed media by Chrystyna and Jaroslawa Kinal, Christina Saj, Volodymyr Podlievsky, Alla Rogers, and Yuri Khymych; ceramic art by Natalia Kormeluk; and pysanky by Sofika Zielyk. Two highlights of the show are church scenes by Ukrainian Artist Yuri Khymych.
Despite its modest size, the exhibit's range and quality have afforded an excellent learning experience for the 400+ students attending St. Andrew's. In the future, plans for such exhibits should cast a broader call for participation to reach other talented Ukrainian-American artists living in the Metropolitan area.
