UCC applauds Canada’s commitment to Ukraine
April 25, 2005 Ukrainian Canadian Congress congratulates the Government of Canada with its International Policy Statement “A Role of Pride and Influence in the World” announced on April 19. The Minister of Foreign Affairs Minister Pierre Pettigrew, National Defence Minister Bill Graham, International Cooperation Minister Aileen Carroll and International Trade Minister Jim Peterson have established a bold vision and an integrated plan designed to strengthen Canada’s role in the world. The UCC is pleased that Canada has identified Ukraine as one of 25 countries that will be the focus of at least 66% of international development funding provided by the Canadian International Development Agency.
The UCC has long advocated Ukraine’s geopolitical, strategic, economic, and cultural importance to Canada and the world. The democratic and economic development of Ukraine not only serves to improve the lives of the Ukrainian people but reinforces Canada’s foreign interests by contributing to the stability of Central and Eastern Europe and provides stable markets for Canadian investment and export. Canada is home to well over 1.2 million Canadians that draw their lineage to Ukraine.
“With the success of the Orange Revolution in ensuring a democratically elected President, the people of Ukraine rejected the corrupt practices of the past and have turned their attention to building a democratic Ukraine - a Ukraine that will be a model to other countries and a true partner to Canada. We anticipate that Canada will advocate for Ukraine to become a member of the WTO, NATO and take its rightful place in the world arena. For Canada to maximize its foreign development resources it will be necessary for CIDA and other Government organizations to work with the UCC and members of the Ukrainian Canadian community to deliver various programs in Ukraine.” said UCC President Irene (Orysia) Sushko. UCC looks forward to working together with the Government of Canada to realize these policy objects and recognizes the valuable support from all Members of Parliament and of the Senate in fostering this special relationship between Canada and Ukraine.”
