Statement by Ukrainian Canadian Congress
on the Successful Presidential Election in Ukraine
As president of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress, I extend my deep appreciation to the UCC Observer Mission Team in Ukraine, especially Paul Grod (Head of the Mission Team) and Irene Mycak (Chair, Ukraine Election Committee), as well as the 500 UCC election observers. In addition, I wish to acknowledge the efforts of our Executive Director and staff at the National Headquarters in Winnipeg, the staff in the UCC office in Toronto, the Provincial Councils and local UCC branches, the enormous contingent of volunteers and all those in Ukraine and Canada who supported the efforts of the UCC throughout this vital period.
We are especially indebted to the resoundingly successful Fundraising Committee, chaired by James Temerty, for its initiative in providing funding in the sum of over one million dollars for this mission and the democratic process in Ukraine. We are truly indebted to all those who donated.
Our combined efforts provided the people of Ukraine the opportunity of being heard and having their will respected, thus allowing the democratic process to prevail. We are grateful, as well, to all who worked with the Ukrainian Canadian Congress to orchestrate this massive observer mission. We are grateful to the government of Canada for its tremendous support of democracy in Ukraine and applaud Prime Minister Paul Martin for his leadership in this respect.
The Ukrainian Canadian Congress congratulates the people of Ukraine on their significant democratic victory and extends our best wishes for every success in all their endeavours. We look forward to a strong and democratic future for the Ukrainian nation.
Irene (Orysia) Sushko
National President
Ukrainian Canadian Congress
