BACKGROUND:
During the winter of 1932-33 over 10 million men, women and children died of forced starvation during an act of genocide perpetrated by Joseph Stalin and his underlings in Ukraine.
Nearly one-third of Ukraine's population was exterminated during Stalin's forced collectivization of Ukraine.
Ukrainians were dying at a rate of 25,000 per day at the height of the Genocide Famine.
The Soviet Union covered up the Ukrainian Genocide Famine and labeled references to the Ukrainian Famine as "anti-Soviet slander".
American journalists stationed in Moscow assisted in the cover-up. "Any report of a famine in Ukraine is today an exaggeration or malignant propaganda," wrote Walter Duranty of the New York Times.
The Ukrainian Genocide Famine Foundation - U.S.A., Inc. requests members of the press to cover the Ukrainian Genocide Famine Commemoration on September 19, 2004 at the Metropolitan Chicago Genocide-Famine Memorial in Bloomingdale IL.
There are over 100,000 Ukrainian-Americans in Illinois. Chicago is home to the 2nd largest population of Ukrainian-Americans in the entire United States.
