U.S. Senate Resolution Commemorating Ukraine's 10th Anniversary
As you know, on August 24, 2001, Ukraine will be celebrating the 10th anniversary of its Independence, a great achievement of the Ukrainian people after centuries of foreign occupation and a subsequent struggle for freedom. Ukraine has a chance to take its place in the family of European nations. This anniversary is a crucial point in the life of a free and independent Ukraine. The homeland of our forefathers has progressed toward democratic and free market reforms, but areas such as corruption and an independent media, still leave substantial room for improvement. It is extremely important that the United States show interest and involvement in the fate of Ukraine by congratulating the Ukrainian people on this great achievement.

During Congress' last week in session before its traditional August recess, a resolution commemorating the 10th Anniversary of Ukrainian Independence will be introduced in the Senate. It is imperative that the Ukrainian community contact their Senator requesting their support and passage of the Senate Resolution. The Ukrainian National Information Service (UNIS) appeals to the Ukrainian community to write/fax/call your United States Senator's office to support the Senate concurrent resolution regarding Ukraine's 10th Anniversary of Independence. By congratulating Ukraine on its first decade of independence, the United States will acknowledge the importance of Ukraine for American national security interests and demonstrate the desire of the U.S. government to remain involved in Ukraine's development. It will confirm America's desire to help Ukraine continue on its course of fully integrating into Europe and the Western world. The United States, as the leader of democratic nations, needs to encourage young Ukraine to persevere on the road to democratization and free markets.
For your convenience, please use the linked sample letter from UNIS, or create your own, while writing to your Senator. If you have any other questions, please contact Michael Sawkiw, Jr.; President of the Ukrainian Congress Committee of America (UCCA), or Serhiy Zhykharev; Director of Congressional Relations, at the Ukrainian National Information Service (UNIS) at (202) 547-0018.
