    The Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) was established as a functional commission of the Economic and Social Council by Council resolution 11(II) of 21 June 1946 to prepare recommendations and reports to the Council on promoting women's rights in political, economic, civil, social and educational fields.

    The Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW), adopted in 1979 by the UN General Assembly, is often described as an international bill of rights for women.  Consisting of a preamble and 30 articles, it defines what constitutes discrimination against women and sets up an agenda for national action to end such discrimination.

    Global Survival Network (GSN)

    The Global Survival Network is a Washington DC based nonprofit, non-governmental organization. GSN recently complete a 2-year undercover investigation into the trafficking of women for prostitution from Russia and the Newly Independent States. You can order their final report entitled Crime & Servitude: An Expose in the Traffic in women for Prostitution from the Newly Independent States, and their 42-minute documentary video entitled BOUGHT & SOLD. Both are available in English and in Russian. The video includes:

    • undercover footage of meetings with the Russian mafiya about trafficking operations into the United States, Japan and Australia
    • interviews with women who were trafficked overseas to countries including Germany, Spain, and China
    • perspectives from international experts about how to address the problem
