PROGRAM ASSISTANT OA - KENNAN INSTITUTE

SALARY: $23,506/$25,976 per annum
LOCATION: WASHINGTON, D.C.

PLEASE NOTE: Applications must be received by the closing date. This position may have promotion potential to the WW-07 level.

DUTIES: The incumbent serves as the principal clerical and administrative assistant to the Director of the Kennan Institute for Advanced Russian Studies (KIARS) and assists in the coordination of all activities of the Institute. Assists other staff members, serves as the first line of contact for the Institute, receiving telephone calls and visitors, and provides information related to KIARS' activities. Types a variety of correspondence, reports, and other materials on a computer or typewriter; organizes and maintains files. Arranges travel and accommodation for staff members, visitors, and visiting scholars as necessary; compiles lists of specialists for Institute events; drafts and sends invitations; arranges for facilities, catering services, special supplies, and assists in preparing travel vouchers. Controls incoming correspondence, determines whether it should be brought to the attention of the Director, appropriate staff, or handled personally; responds to routine correspondence, and drafts replies covering technical/substantive material as appropriate. This position is also responsible for maintaining the database, keeping all records up-to-date and accurate; performs queries, sorts, and provides lists and reports for mailings; and performs regular backups and provides for recovery of data in the event of a problem. Works with the Center's Library staff regarding Russian language materials and performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS: At the WW-05 level applicants must have one year of specialized experience or a bachelor's degree from an accredited University. To be eligible for the WW-06 level, applicants must have one year of specialized experience. Specialized experience is administrative/clerical/fiscal experience which demonstrates possession of the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to serve as an office assistant. In addition, qualified applicants must be able to type 40 wpm.

SELECTIVE FACTORS (mandatory):
1.Ability to type 40 wpm.
2.Ability to use a personal computer.

QUALITY RANKING FACTORS (desirable):
1.Ability to use a variety of computer software packages to perform/automate office work.
2.Ability to use database software.
3.Knowledge of/or interest in Russian studies.
4.Russian language facility.
5.Previous expereince organizing conferences and seminars.
