"Master of the Drum: A Buryat Shaman's Chant"
the cover feature in the winter 2000 issue of SHAMAN'S DRUM
The ten page spread includes an introduction to the material, a translation
of Bayir Rinchinov's chant to his sacred objects, notes on objects mentioned
and 14 pictures, one of them in color. The chant was recorded and translated
from the Buryat Mongolian by Sayan Zhambalov, Virlana Tkacz and Wanda Phipps.
The photos are from Yara Art Group expedition to the Buryat Aginsk Region in
1997 and include several shots from the shaman ritual the group witnessed then,
as well a photos of other rituals conducted by Bayir Rinchinov. The photos are by
Watoku Ueno, Tom Lee, Wanda Phipps and Virlana Tkacz. The cover painting of a
Buryat Shaman with Mask is by Timothy White the editor of the magazine.
