ELECTIONS IN UKRAINE MONITOR

According to the information of the Central Election Commission, made public on April 7, 1998 26, 571,273 voters took part in the March 29 elections to the Ukrainian parliament (70.78% of 37,540,092 registered voters).

114 independent candidates with no party affiliation and 111 party-affiliated candidates were elected in the 225 single-mandate constituencies. 40 will represent the Communist Party, 14 - Rukh, 11 - National Democratic Party, 8 - Agrarian Party, 7 - Hromada, 6 - Socialist/Peasant Parties, 4 - Congress of Ukrainian Nationalists and Social Democratic Party (United). Progressive Socialist and Christian Democratic parties, and Reforms and Order Party will be represented by 3 deputies each. Two deputies were elected from each of the following parties: Union, and Ukrainian Republican parties, 1 - from Interregional Block of Reforms, Liberal, Socialist National, Ukrainian Christian Democratic parties, Christian Democratic Union and ?Fewer Words? election block.

With votes counted in 224 election constituencies, 17,481,593 voters supported the parties and election blocks which have overcome the 4% threshold and therefore will be represented in the parliament on a party list basis:
