Law On Crimean Constitution Signed

Ukraine's President Leonid Kuchma has signed the law "On Approval of the Constitution of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea," which was recently adopted by the Ukrainian Parliament. President Kuchma also signed the law "On Conducting in the Lviv Region an Experiment on Payment of Pensions By the Ukrainian Pension Fund."

Prime Minister Pustovoitenko To Initiate Creation Of All-Ukrainian Public Association In January

Ukraine's Prime Minister Valeriy Pustovoitenko has stated his intention to initiate the creation of a public/political association to consolidate the entire Ukrainian society. Mr. Pustovoitenko disclosed this intention on January 2 during New Year celebrations at the Ukrainian House. According to him, the association will be more of a public than political organization, the goal of which will be to unite the population with the intention of raising their standard of living and improving the social and economic situation in Ukraine. Mr. Pustovoitenko said a major step in this direction is the Ukraine-2000 program, which will be adopted soon and expected to become one of the most important documents of the new year. The Ukrainian prime minister said particular importance would be attached to youth policy and government assistance to young families. The ceremony was also attended by Deputy Prime Minister Valeriy Smolyi, Youth and Family Minister Valentina Dovzhenko, Arts and Culture Minister Dmytro Ostapenko, and several members of Parliament.

Ukraine's Population Is At 50,09 Million Level

Ukraine's population will be 50,090,900 by January 1, 1999, having reduced by 204,500 within one year, officials at the State Statistics Committee told Ukrainian News on December 29, 1998. The urban population will drop to 34,004,400 as of January 1, 1999 from 34,138,000 as of January 1, 1998 while the rural population will drop to 16,086,500 from 16,157,400. The Kyiv population will drop to 2,623,600 by January, 1, 1999 from 2,626,400 as of January 1, 1998.
