About the show
Yara began work on this show last spring with actors from Kyiv. We took 12 poems written in 1920 by Pavlo Tychyna (Ukraine's greatest 20th c poet) about the reactions of individuals to a world crumbling around them and transformed the poetry into scenes, action, music and projections. Then we had Serhiy Zhadan, Ukrainian's greatest poet of the 21st century, and his rock band the Dogs burst through these scenes.
Yara's 1917/2017: Tychyna, Zhadan and the Dogs is an intense hour-long theatrical performance in three sections conceived and directed by Virlana Tkacz, Yara's artistic director, who has created 30 original theater pieces which premiered at La MaMa in New York and is a recipient of three Fulbright Fellowships. Music is by Julian Kytasty, who combines a mastery of traditional bandura style with cross cultural experimentations. The performers include Serhiy Zhadan and the Dogs, as well as actors Larysa Rusnak, Mykola Shkaraban, Robert Feldman, Malvina Salijchuk and Vladislav Onishchenko. The set and lights are by Ievhen Kopiov, sound by Stanislav Bronishevsky and projections by Waldemart Klyuzko. The Dogs are a six piece band from Kharkiv with musical roots in Ska and include: Ievhen Turchynov (voice, guitar), Andrii Pyvovarov (bass, voice), Oleksander Merenchuk (trombone), Vitaliy Bronishevskiy (percussion), Artem Dmytrychenkov (horn), Serhiy Kulaienko (keyboards). Serhiy Zhadan is their front-man.
1917/2017: Tychyna, Zhadan and the Dogs was made possible with public funds from the US Embassy, the New York State Council on the Arts, as well as Self-Reliance FCUs and friends of Yara Arts Group.
