Text Box: Featured Artist: Alla Zahaykevych
Alla Zahaykevych (or Zagaikevych) is a Ukrainian composer from Kyiv who combines traditional classical music with contemporary multidisciplinary projects such as installations and performances. She performs with the Electronic music group Electroacuoustical Ensemble. She studied in Kyiv and Paris at IRCAM and from 1986-1999 was a member of the folk group Drevo. Since the mid-1990s, she has been a leading proponent of electronic music in Ukraine and a curator on many international projects. 
She was the recipient of the Ukrainian National Dovzhenko Award for her film score  for the film Mamay, which was Ukraine’s 2003 submission to the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. She is the winner of Dresden’s Blaue Brücke Prize and is the subject of a major new book (in Russian) by Dr. Inna Rakunova “The New Composition Technologies: Alla Zahaykevych’s Works.” Her work has only been heard once before in the USA, at the 2004 American Festival of Microtonal Music in New York. Last year she composed the electronic music for Yara’s Raven.

Text Box:    Vira Slywotzky who appeared in Yara’s Koliada: Twelve Dishes at La MaMa was in Aphrodite & Athena: A Portrait of Isabella Stewart at Merkin Concert Hall – Kaufman Center in New York in October.
   Virlana Tkacz, Yara’s director, will be traveling to Edmonton Canada where she will speak about Yara “Dreams & Destinations” Feb 2 at 3PM 227 Athabasca Hall. She will also speak at the Folklore Lunch at noon next day at the Arts Building. Both events are at the University of Alberta
Watoku Ueno, Yara’s resident designer, designed the set and props for Ping Chong’s Angels of Swedenborg, with the Great Jones Repertory Company at La MaMa’s Ellen Stewart Theatre October 27 to November 13. Yara’s George Drance appeared in the show and Keiko Obremski was a costume assistant.
   Meredith Wright, who appeared in many of Yara’s shows including Flight and Circle, performed Kidstuff at The Mary Lea Johnson Performing Arts Center and the New York Aquarium in October.
Text Box:    Nina Arianda, who appeared in Yara’s Still the River Flows, is reprising her performance in Venus in Furs the new play by David Ives inspired by the erotic novel by the Lviv author Sacher-Masoch. Nina won great reviews for the initial run of the show at CSC downtown last year. Venus in Furs re-opened on Broadway in October and is now moving to the Lyceum Theatre. The New York Times wrote: “Nina Arianda gives a performance that reaffirms one’s belief in the elusive thing known as star-quality.”
   Roman Hurko, who composed music for Yara’s Light From the East and Explosions, composed an English language mass. It was first performed at St Francis of Xavier Roman Catholic Church on November 12, 2011 and the following day at St George’s Ukrainian Catholic Church in New York. Roman directed the choir and the mass was sung by Rev George Drance, SJ, Rev Edward Evanko. Reviewers have called it “divine.”
  Susan Hyon, who appeared in Yara’s Janyl and Er Toshtuk, was in Ethan Coen's play Happy Hour at the Atlantic. 
   Askold Melnyczuk, who has read at several Yara winter festivals, received the George Garret

Award for Outstanding Community Service in Literature at this year’s Conference and Bookfair of the Association Writers, one of the largest literary gatherings in America. Askold is the author of three novels, founder of Agni Review and has been teaching creative writing for over 40 years.  CONGRATULATIONS!!

  Andrew Pang, who appeared in Yara’s Virtual Souls, will be directing Harold Pinter’s The Dumb Waiter for the National Asian Theatre Company. The show ran through November 6 at the Duo Theatre.

  Hettienne Park, who appeared in Yara’s The Warrior’s Sister, is currently in the Seminar, a new comedy about wanna be writers and ego-bruising teachers with Alan Rickman. The show is at the Golden Theatre on Broadway.

   Wanda Phipps, Yara’s drarmaturg, read her poetry at the Marin Poetry Center in Honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day with Indigo Moor and Al Young Thursday, January 19, 2012 at the Falkirk Cultural Center 1408 Mission and E Streets San Rafael, California
