La MaMa and Yara Arts Group present Koliadnyky of Kryvorivnia in concert. The "koliadas," as they are remembered in the Carpathians are sung incantations that assume the magical power of voiced words. They are some of the best-preserved examples of oral literature from pre-Christian times. Ivan Zelenchuk, the leader of the Koliada in Kryvorivnia, will sing the old songs accompanied by Dmytro Tafiychuk, on fiddle, “trembita” (10-foot long mountain horn) and “duda” (bag pipes). They will be joined by Valeriy Zhmud and others in their presentation of Hutsul instrumental music and rhyming songs. Virlana Tkacz will speak about the Koliada ritual. La MaMa Galleria 6 East 1st St (between Bowery and 2nd Ave) Wednesday, March 16, 2005 at 7 PM. Free event.
