Yara Arts Group celebrated the publication of In a Different Light, with a presentation at the Shevchenko Scientific Society in New York on Saturday, October 4, 2008.

The book is an anthology of Ukrainian poetry that Virlana Tkacz and Wanda Phipps translated to create the texts for Yara's theatre pieces. It features the works of 37 authors, both in the original and in English translations. Also included are Lesia Ukrainka's play Forest Song and epics, ritual songs, and incantations. Yara theatre pieces that generated the translations are described in a separate section that includes 32 color photographs from Yara's productions. The book, edited by Olha Luchuk, with an introduction by Natalia Pylypiuk, was published by Sribne Slovo Press in Lviv.

The book launch event included a presentation of projected photographs from the productions which Virlana Tkacz discussed, while Wanda Phipps, Olga Shuhan and Alexandra Myrna read bi-lingual versions of poems from the shows. Julian Kytasty played the music he composed to a Tkacz & Phipps translation of Attila Mohylny's "Flying South Through the Night." He also sang an epic song (duma) in Ukrainian, as Virlana read her translation. The presentation ended with a rousing bilingual version of Oksana Zabuzhko's "Symptoms of Poetry" read by Virlana, Wanda and Olga. Book signing and reception followed.

You can read some of the translations:

Pavlo Tychyna's "Rhythm"
Ludmyla Taran's "India Ink"
Oleh Lysheha's "Song 212"
Attila Mohylny "Flying South Through the Night"
Oksana Zabuzhko's "Symptoms of Poetry"
