EDUCATION PROGRAMS


GUIDED TOURS

The Museum offers guided tours of current exhibitions. All tours must be reserved in advance. School groups must be accompanied by at least one chaperone per ten students.

Cost: $9 for adults; $7 for students and seniors.


WORKSHOPS FOR YOUTH GROUPS

Student and community groups may wish to combine their guided tours of exhibitions with a gallery activity or a workshop led by a Museum educator. Activities and workshops can be tailored to specific groups or ages. Please contact the Museum to discuss your group's needs.

FAMILY PROGRAMS

Families are invited to take a guided tour of current exhibitions with a Museum educator and to participate in a hands-on workshop afterwards. Children must be at least 5 years old. Workshops must be reserved at least one week in advance.

Cost: $15 per family (1 adult and 1 child; $5 for each additional child)
All materials are provided.

SCHOOL PROGRAMS
for students K-12

This program includes a tour followed by an exhibition-related hands-on project led by a Museum educator. Students learn about Ukrainian art, folklore, and related cultural and social issues. All programs are age-appropriate and are designed to complement the school curriculum in accordance with NYS Learning Standards for the Arts. Groups must be accompanied by at least one chaperone per ten students, and all tours and workshops must be reserved in advance.

EMBROIDERY

This eight-session course will teach beginners the rudiments of embroidery while expanding the skills of those proficient in the craft. Students start from the basic running stitch and advance to little known stitches and intricate cut-work techniques. Participants will explore the history and evolution of styles, techniques, colors, threads, and fabrics traditionally used in various regions of Ukraine. Open to adults and children over 10 years of age.

Offered winter/spring (usually January-April) and fall (usually September-November).

GERDANY - BEAD-STRINGING

This is a four-session course in the art of making gerdany (bead-strung necklaces), which were traditionally worn with folk costumes in various regions of Ukraine. The course is open to adults and children over 12 years of age.

Offered winter/spring (usually in March) and fall (usually October-November).

UKRAINIAN CHRISTMAS TRADITIONS

This is a workshop with hands-on participation in the baking of traditional Ukrainian Christmas breads. During the sessions participants will learn about customs, traditions and rituals practiced during this joyous holiday. Open to adults and children over 16 years of age.

TRADITIONAL UKRAINIAN CHRISTMAS TREE ORNAMENTS WORKSHOP

Participants in this workshop use beads, walnut shells, colored ribbons, and paper to make traditional Ukrainian Christmas tree ornaments such as spiders, cradles, stars, mobiles, and garlands. Open to children and adults. A great activity for the entire family.

PYSANKY - UKRAINIAN EASTER EGG DECORATION WORKSHOPS

Adults and children will have the opportunity to learn the art of making pysanky - Ukrainian Easter eggs. Dyes, beeswax and a stylus are used to decorate the eggs with traditional Ukrainian designs. The workshop will be given on Saturdays and Sundays. This year, fill your Easter basket with beautiful pysanky, rather than just plain colored eggs!

DEMONSTRATIONS IN THE MAKING OF PYSANKY - UKRAINIAN EASTER EGGS

Artisans experienced in this art form will create beautiful pysanky. Slavko Nowytski's award-winning film "PYSANKA" will also be shown. This program is scheduled to run continuously during the afternoon Pre-registration is not required. Demonstrators: Sofika Zielyk & Anna Gbur

BAKING TRADITIONAL WEDDING BREADS WORKSHOP

This workshop offers hands-on training in baking and decorating a korovai (traditional Ukrainian wedding bread). Participants will also learn to adorn the colorful wedding tree hiltse. Open to adults and students over 16 years of age.
