ABOUT UIMA
The Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art (UIMA) was founded in 1971
by Dr. Achilles Chreptowsky in the heart of Chicago's Ukrainian Village at 2320 W Chicago Avenue. Three
storefronts were transformed into a viable musem serving the local
community and the greater Chicago area with an ongoing program of cultural
exhibitions, literary events, film screenings and music recitals.
Five to six major exhibits, often supplemented by catalogs, are held in the
main gallery which occupies 2100 square feet. Three side galleries house the
permanent collection which includes the work of Chicago artists as well as that
of sculptors and painters of Ukrainian descent.
The galleries are climate
controlled, have track lighting throughout, and are accessible to the
physically impaired.
UIMA is committed to a program of exhibitions, concerts, lectures and
multidiscliplinary events relevant and challenging to all members of the
community. The immediate neighborhood is home to an ethnically diverse
population consisting of Latinos, African-Americans, and Eastern Europeans
including Ukrainians and Poles, among others.
UIMA is a not for profit arts organization staffed entirely by volunteers
eager to share their vision with the community and the world.
The programs presented by UIMA are partially supported by a grant from the
Illinois Arts Council, a state agency.
