You're brave. I've travelled a lot in Russia and Ukraine, with my relatives that live there, and I often wonder if I could manage even a short jaunt on my own. I speak the language well enough, but it's the bureaucracy and the convoluted ways of getting things done that would screw me up. You definitely have to do your research. There's a good book about train travel by a guy called Athol Yates, can't recall the name of the book, but there is a website, I think. It's not about travel in Ukraine, specifically, but gives a good sense about train travel in Russia and on the Trans Siberian. If you'll be travelling in Ukraine by train, you might get some good information from this book, as the experience is similar between train travel in Russia and Ukraine.
