Completely agree with you John...mainly about Odessa. Dan's right about Kiev--getting a place under $40-45 is almost impossible in the center. However, Odessa is about half of that. My wife (luckily she's a real estate agent) usually arranges the lodging for us, and I'm fully clued in on the scams of which you mention. $20-25 is probably the going fair rate to go by in Odessa, for a decent, clean one bedroom. Sometimes, you can even get a two bedroom for this price.
All travelers should be aware (if they're going there to meet a lady) that landlords are often in business with the respective dating agencies and jack up the prices.
Never stay in a hotel, if you're simply needing a place to stay. Kiev and Odessa hotels (even the so-called four and five star) are more like two and three star, relatively-speaking. The "flats" are just as nice/or nicer and available at bargain prices. The Londonskaya and Krasnaya (in Odessa) charged $150 a night this past summer for their cheapest rooms.
: All genuine travellers should be aware that the OWNERS of apartments in most cities are willing to accept between $20 and $30 for decent standard 2 room apartments. Agents make an incredible $20 to $30 dollars PER NIGHT from gullible travellers who don't know better. Never pay for more than 2 nights in advance. Settle in, get to know the place and then try to contact owners directly - you'll save a lot, even if just for the principle of knowing you were not taken for a ride. Admittedly, Kiev does cost a bit more. In Odessa, never pay more than $25. Don't deal with scammers by the name of Olga (linked to Firstdream) and a Turkish student called KIm. All they're interested in is "How much can I make from this sucker"!!!!!!
