Whoever this Steve person is it is obvious to me that either:

1) he is not from the US because his posts have an internationalist flavor to them

2) he is from the US and was smoking in the boy's room(bathroom) when the rest of the class was was being taught how the US goverment functions and the realities of political live in the US.

Let me see if I can "help a brutha out".

Any legislation introduced by any member of Congress or any US President that has the slightest whiff of impacting the 2nd Ammendent of the Constitution would cause the National Rifle Association(NRA) to go to battlestations. As Steve may or may not be aware, the NRA is the single most powerfull lobbying presence walking the halls of Capitol Hill. Their membership consists of everyday, hardworking, loyal Americans who consider it their God-given right to have the ability to defend themselves and their families. They spend multiplied millions of $$$ helping to elect Congressmen who agree with their views on the 2nd Ammendment and even more $$$ defeating the ones who might propose tampering with it in any fashion. Their views resonate with the American people also, an example being how Al Gore lost Tennessee, his home state, to George W. Bush in the 2000 election. Once we learned how anti-gun he had become, we voted against him in droves. And for the unaware, if he had won Tennessee then whatever happened in Florida would have been rendered irrelevant. If he had won Tennessee he would have won the Presidency. And he lost Tennessee by 80,000 votes. All because he switched from being pro-gun to anti-gun and the word got out, thanks largely to the efforts of the NRA.

Steve is apparently unaware of the true reason the Founding Fathers wrote the 2nd Ammendment in the first place. It was not to defend against robbers and burglars. They weren't the problem then that they are now. They wanted to make sure that the people had a way to defend themselves against the threat of a tyrannical and renegade government, such as the one being imposed upon them by King George of England. This is an EVER PRESENT THREAT that never will diminish or vanish. As such, the need for armed defense against that threat will never diminish or vanish. Hitler would not have been able to murder 6 million Jews had he not first banned private gun ownership. This is seen repeatedly thru history. A well-armed people is a free people.

Steve seems to have a point of view that ties the rights of the individual to the circumstances of the society that the individual may find himself in. This view is REALLY SCARY. It opens the door to individuals who may take it upon themselves to decide for others what their "rights" in this life shall be, based upon the "dictates" of the society. This is relativism run amok. It also flies in the face of what was stated in the Declaration of Independence that "we are endowed BY OUR CREATOR with certain unalienable rights", meaning that the source authority for our rights as human beings is someone greater than man. This makes our rights immune from the whimsical nature of the human heart as those whims may find expression from time to time and attract to themselves willing adherents. The first ten ammenments to the US Constitution, also known as The Bill of Rights, was based upon this reality, and as such are almost considered "holy writ" among fans of the Constitution, and this includes the 2nd Ammendment. They are, for all intents and purposes, sacrosanct. As such, they should be above the petty purposes of some short-sighted legislator whose reason for living is vote accumlation and who will willingly whore himself out toward that end. Thank God the Founding Fathers of the US looked into the future and saw these clowns comming and thereby wrote into the Constitution the means to render these people irrlelvant.

Like Steve.
