The firearms laws of England were also founded on the same rights of citizens to bear arms and be mustered into local militias or Trained Bands. These date back to the days of the Spainish Armada and Napoleonic Wars right up until the Home Guard ( or Dads Army ) of the 2nd World War.
BUT these rights or laws are not written in stone and have to move with the times. Hence new laws are introduced to curb and control the availability of firearms and the people who can own them.
It seems crazy to me that the Americans hang onto their constitutional right to bear arms against a foreign invader. What invader ?? the redcoats have gone, the Cold War is over - theirs no excuse for them to bear arms anymore. In fact this constitutional right is a threat to US Security and rights of the law abiding citizen to go about their business without let or hinderence.
Finally many CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHTS - including the human right not to be held without trial are being infringed daily thanks to the War against terrorism. So it would be very easy for the US to scrap the right to bear arms - under some Anti terrorism act.
