By the way agree Odessa fun in the summer. My friend says because the real Odessans go the the dachas and everyone else from other cities, etc. But yes summer in Odessa is alot of fun and yes the govt tries to make it safe. But Tijuana is fun also (for people from San Diego) but also very dangerous as well if you in wrong place at wrong time. Odessa has been refered to as the Tijuana of Ukraine by some. Mike you are lucky if nothing has happened to you just like I was lucky nothing having happened to me growing up in New York city. BUT unless I walked around the ghetto at night ,basically there was nothing that would make me a target. In Ukraine,Odessa having money and being a foreigner makes us a target. The truth hurts but it is childs play to figure that out. As an Expat it should be your obligation to admit that it can be dangerous, yes maybe we hang out in other circles but unfortunately most foreigners hang out in center and that is where they were attacked. Also about comnment about poorer areas . Well yes poor areas generally have more violent crimes, in America anyway ,you know black on black they say, But Ukrainian demographics are different. Remember everyone basically same race so there arent going to be racial attacks in the bad areas and in the bad areas its not really that bad. Foreigners tend to forget that there are many poor living on the best center streets of Odessa. They have no money but valuable apartment while in the cheaper real easte areas(I thought this is what you meant by poorer, correct me if I am wrong) those residents are necessarily any poorer. When apts were privatized thats where they were living. In soviet times the outer areas ws the desirable place to live. My wife grew up in large apt in outskirts because her father had very importan position. This was the area with parks, more rooms, etc. Center was not so desirable. Yes now center is desirable ,but mostly for business and foreigners. Mos wealthy Russians rather live in outskirts in big house or large new flast. Arcadia area actually , even though flasts less money is considered probably more desirable as place to live then center is for native Odessans. Believe me the gangs do not expect to find victims in what you refer to as porer areas, they know to find prospects in center. As for Arcadia in summer, actually it is known for having many street fights but I have not heard of anything serios but the guy who was beaten and robed at the beach , I believe it was at Arcadia and it was during the crowded beach going day.
What does all of this mean? probably nothing as long as you use your head and do not think you should do unsensible things. Also my experience with small cities ,is yes I have never felt it is as dangerous, but thats simply because the roaming thieve packs, robers, etc probably have not really existe there because who to rob?attack?etc. They will have to attack other natives but there are not many foreigners to actualy focus on, but ofcourse in Odessa they pretty much know what streets foreignrrs will walk on and what dark side streets they will walk from night club A TO ETC. It's during this point to point walking where certain people have been attacked . Sometimes they wre asked for a cigarette or the time.My advice just keep going because by answering yu might be confirming your foreighness.
Incidently, I have not heard of any foreigners murdered in Odessa, but 1.
