I agree with much of what is writen but would like to add my experience:

While there is shortage of doctors in UK it is not easy for doctors from other countries to be employed in NHS.Even doctors from Poland will find it hard to get work in UK.It is not true that Ukranian doctors will be/are welcomed with open arms as they will need to pass the PLAB exam which is not easy and then have to find a job without any state support.I know doctors who have not been able to find jobs for over one year.

I visited Kiev in July 2004 and I am visitng again next week. Both times I applied for tourist visa by post and received it in one week without any need to telephone.

I had no problems at all while going through Ukranian custom on my last visit. The pretty young lady only asked if I had more then $1000 in cash and what value gifts I had,and just sent me through. However on my way back the customs inspector(a man) made attempts to search my laguage, when I asked what was he looking for he said dollars. When I said all the dollars I had were in my wallet he immidiatly apologised and sent me away.
No doubt I would love to be able to go to Ukraine without any need for visa.My only concern is that if this hapens the temptation to fly off to this enchanting place may be just too much to resist. So maybe the expense and inconvenience of getting a visa is a good thing after all!
