When I first started visiting Ukraine, my in-laws were very nervous about my going out alone. But conditions have gotten a lot better over the past 5 years.
They live in the burbs of Kiev. At night it can be a little rough, still. BUt lewt me tell you what is the great equilizer there...
I was entering the apartment and some local "tough guy" teens were sitting on the stoop and they figured out I was foreign (I do get mistaken often for local). They asked in broken english what time it was and sneered and snickered a bit. It was obvious it was not a nice comment.
I went in and grabbed Gertruda, my in-laws's 120 lb. Rottwiler and took her for a walk... Right back out the door the teens were sittin at. Gera is not a friendly dog with strangers. No more problems, not a peep from them.
Who needs pepper spray when you can rip arms and legs off?
