Roundtrip airfare problem to Ukraine

Hello all--

I plan a 10-month stay in Ukraine, but I'm running into problems finding economical roundtrip airfare from the US for longer than 3-6 month stays. Has anyone else run into this problem? And isn't it correct that you have to have a return ticket in order to be admitted to the country? I've found that returns (fixed or open) beyond 6 months are exorbitantly expensive. One travel agent suggested buying a fully refundable roundtrip (at a whopping $2700) and cashing in the return later after arrival. Then buy a one-way back to the States closer to the time I plan to return. Does anyone have a better method than this to avoid this problem? Thanks for your help.
