This Arms Dump fire does look serious, apparently until all the munitions have exploded where the fire is raging - No firefighters can extinguish the flames. So they are obviously hoping it will burn itself out. In the meantime Russia has despatched a team of Rocket and Munition experts to assist the Ukrainians.
Also a major highway connecting Moscow with the Ukrainian city of Simferopol is closed due to ammunition and shrapnel flying across a 10-km (six-mile) radius prompting the evacuation of nearly 10,000 residents.
The problem for Ukraine, following the breakup of the Soviet Union, is it inheritated a number of munition dumps and stores from the Soviet Army. A legacy of the days when the Soviet economy was geared to producing arms and weapons during the height of the Cold War. Of course much of this stuff was never used and is stockpiled in munitions dumps near former Soviet Army bases in Russia and the former Soviet Union.
Of course Ukraine doesn't need it all and if they are sensible - they should be going through a munitions destruction program. Hopefully following this explosion - they will hasten this munitions destruction program.
