: I shall be flying from Warsaw to Lviv in May - has anyone any up-to-date information and advice regarding negotiating customs on arrival.

: Many thanks,

Over the last two years Lviv Airport has improved in its attitude and welcome towards visitors no end! When last there in January I used the VIP service - only started up again last year - cannot remember exact price as paid for it through my travel agent in with other items - but it was inexpensive and well worth it!

Using the VIP service you remain on the bus until other passengers disembark - the bus drops VIPs at a sep. entrance - you enter the lounge, sit down, hand over your passport and fill out Immigration Form (trick for returning visitors is to take a few extra - also Customs Declaration Forms - for future visits and fill out in advance - if you have been travelling for hours and are tired doing this helps a lot!) and wait for the baggage to be unloaded from the plane. Your baggage is then brought to you and off you go - no Customs - nothing. Your driver/friends can wait for you in this lounge - it was so quick.

without VIP you make a dash off the bus - collect your Immigration Form (remember to fill in both sections - Arrival and Departure - otherwise you will be sent to the back of the queue to fill in the other part) and Customs Declaration Form - then wait in line to show your Passport/Visa and Immigration Forms when called to the window. Depending on the number of passengers this can either be relatively quick or very slow. You can pass through into another room and hopefully collect your luggage, avoiding the pushy porters who are only too eager to move your bags for you in return for a tip. My last two trips in the last year have been easy going through Customs - polite and friendly (previously anything but) - I have brought gifts in my luggage without any questions - and only declared money over $1000 as is required. It was announced early last year on Lviv TV that procedures at the airport were being made more visitor-friendly and this seems to be true.

After clearing Customs you walk through another section where you are asked what passport you hold - this is for insurance - as a UK citizen I am entitled to free emergency healthcare and do not need to purchase their insurance.

Leaving: once again used VIP in january - only arrived 35 minutes before flight - waited with friends in the VIp lounge - all other passengers taken to bus - I went out last of all having gone through security and passport - no questions asked apart from did I have any Ukrainian currency on me - and taken on to bus with luggage - so easy! Otherwise once you check in normally you sit in the departure lounge, having said goodbye to your friends. Going this way I have had to open my cases on several occasions.

Lviv airport seem to be employing younger friendlier staff - thank goodness!

Hope this helps - enjoy your trip! Lviv is wonderful. Clyna
