In May of this year my wife and I stayed with friends in western Ukraine. The food they prepared for us was INCREDIBLE!!! Three or four course meals every day, every meal. Each meal featured fresh veggies from their garden and many surprises. Some of the dishes were simple but very tasty. Our hosts also prepared a different tort (cake) each day we were there! THEY WERE WITHOUT QUESTION THE BEST TORTS I HAVE EVER HAD!!!
They were not as sweet as most of the cakes and pastries found in the U.S.. I much prefer their torts as you can savor the rich taste of the entire creation without being overwhelmed with sugar. I ate like a pig for nine days (much to the delight of our hosts) and I did not gain one pound. We ate at a cafe on one trip to Lviv and the food was very bland compared to the home cooked feasts we were enjoying.
