: I am sorry to disagree with most of you. But when I visited Lviv last time, I was so happy that McDonalds had finally opened. Along with GSM mobilephones and ATMs, this was to a sure sign of progress and civilisation. Lots of Ukrainian food has this colorless and shivery look. If you are so lucky to find a bread truck at 2.00 AM on your way home, you will get a soft bread which is grey inside. And the milk which comes in one flavour only has a strong smell of cow. But I do love Borsch and the small potato pancakes. Thank god for McDonalds.
Oh dear, 'Thank god for McDonalds' ? It always ammuses me, when people travel to a completely different country, how the less appealing aspects of home gain greater importance.
I am no particular lover of Ukrainian food, but everytime I am in Ukraine/Russia I want to try the local food. I find the increasing advance of the sacred golden M particularly worrying, even in the suburbs of Kyiv, there it is.
So many Americans I meet in Kyiv will only eat at Uncle Sams, or Arizona. Lets see some more adventerous spirit. I am sure that you havent tried all types of Ukrainian food, live dangerously, when I first tasted Kefir I hated it, now I am addicted
