I'm on my way from the US to L'viv for a couple of weeks next Wednesday, and you guys are making my mouth water!! I've never been there before, but am eager for new experiences, including new and different food. No MacDonalds for me, thanks!

: Hi Tamara,

: Yes I agree with you on vegetables. My Fiancee's (Also called Tamara) house has a big garden, and her family make full use of it. Therefore from spring tright through the summer they have, fresh fruit (pears, apricots etc) fresh herbs (which are a billion times better than packet herbs for flavour) and lots of fresh tomatoes. All organic and all full of flavour. When Tamara visited my home in Ireland (which has a proud agricultural tradition), She found the tomatoes watery and tasteless, and likewise with other fruits and vegetables (and I had to agree).

: Also I suspect the contributor Soren is very ingenuous in his criticism, I suspect he did not experience REAL home cooking

: One more thing did you think that amongst the households you would visit that there is an unstated competition amongst the hosts to see who could provide the best variety, best cooked etc. And the recipe swapping would be hectic !

: Cheers

: Damian

: p.s. with the variety of cooking I have experienced that if I were to write a definitive Ukrainian cookbook, it would be the equivalent of a couple of volumes of the encyclopedia brittanica

:
: : I, too, like their way of eating there. Many hours spent at a table, enjoying food, drink, and each other's conversation. Where the goal is not to gobble up the food as quickly as possible and go and watch TV!
: : In the summer, I especially love the mushrooms that we've picked. My favourite is fried mushrooms in sour cream. I also like the tomato and cucumber salads, and, yes, I appreciate that it's all organic. They were interested to know that I pay twice the price for organic produce at home! I always ask for fried potatoes when I'm there. They just taste better than they do here.My uncle begs for mercy, that maybe we could have one dinner without fried potatoes!
: : Dairy products, which I don't much care for at home, are so delicious that I eat lots of them. Tvorog and smetana with a little sugar on top mmm.
: : I always lose weight there, even though I don't exercise as much, and eat and drink WAY more alcohol than at home. I think there may be a diet book in here somewhere. We could make a fortune on "The Ukrainian Diet - Eat Your Way Thin with Sour Cream and Vodka".
