Hi Tamara,

I enjoyed Ukrainian cuisine a lot. I would not say that it is high in fat compared to western diets. Despite the Ukrainian love of Salo and Hollendates (A jelly like fat) and Sour cream, it is usually consumed with lots of salad, vegetables and fruit. Fish is a big favourite, caviar too(Ikra) and the Smoked Salmon I would bring on my visits would be well received. I did not see a chip pan or deep fat frier which would be common place in Western Europe (especially the British Isles). The only fried food I had was chicken. Other dishes such as pelmeni and vereniky seem virtually fat free, like Italian ravioli. My favourite was barbecued Shashlik, mm mmm.

What I found unbelievable is the Ukrainians love of Sweets, Cakes, Sugary coffee and tea. I cant stand sugar in Tea or coffee, and I was looked upon as a freak. I have seen boxes and boxes of biscuits and sweets polished off and then followed by cakes. Although I do like blinchki (pancakes with a "cottage cheese" and raisin filling.

I think the bottom line is that the Ukrainians love a big feast, and love to sit back and slowly eat there way through a variety of dishes discussing all sorts of topics and sharing anecdotes. I thought this was great, a real cosy feeling, a family/freindly atmosphere where there is plenty of room at the table for one more. Who cares about the calories when the hospitality is this good.

Priyatna Appetita,

Damian

: : I'm interested to know what people think of Ukrainian cuisine. I think North Americans have been conditioned to fear fat in food. Slavic cooking is notoriously high in fat. Mmmm sour cream everywhere and lotsa fried food. How have you dealt with that when you travelled there? Did you avoid it or embrace it?
: : Webmaster, I do hope that discussing food in Ukraine falls into the travel and culture category and will be allowed!
