I totally agree. I'm not against paying more because I'm a tourist. But it's crazy to pay rent that would buy the apartment outright in a year's time.
Ukriane went to a capitalist economy... Supply and demand. A market will flourish when there is a balance in what what is charged and what it will bear.
I don't understand what's fair about a person that makes $300 a month and owns his apartment demanding $700 a month from a foreign tourist and then charging a local $200 a month for the same apartment.
I always enjoy Ukraine and consider it my second home. So I hope that people don't take my opnions as being too critical.

: Man oh man!
: I am sorry Mr. Russian Ivan has such misperceptions about America (and free economy):
: First: A worker's average salary in Texas (a rich state)is $1,800.00 to $2,000.00 DLLs. per month .
: Second: I can find many nice flats (kitchenette, Air conditioned, drinking water, hot water any time, nice location, cleaning service, parking space, etc.) for $650.00 DLLs. a month!
: Third: the economy in U.S.A. is such that the earnings are nicely dispersed among several people. The man that owns the above mentioned flat has to pay many fees and other people to provide the tenant with such niceties. Many people profit from these simple transactions; the landlord doesn't pocket the entire $750.00 DLLs. to himself!
: Fourth: In a free economy, I respect a businessman (greedy or not) who can get the most Dollars for his flat, but I also respect the shopper who wants to get the most for his Dollar.
: Kiev is a wonderful town, available to all, Ukrainians, Russians, Americans, Asians, etc... I have visited many towns with tourist driven economies (by greedy businessmen) which best amenities and attractions are placed well beyond the means of the local common people. This condition has always typically happened shortly after the authorities and business community starts sanctioning two layered pricing systems to operate. It would be terrible if this happened in Kiev. I really wish to praise the MANY good businesspeople in Ukraine I have had the pleasure of dealing with, I like to think that my referrals and those of others help them stay busy and succesful!
