: The Council of Europe springs to mind, apart from all the aid and training given to Ukraine they also have helped to curb the imaginative wonderland of Kuchma's brand of politik, thus bringing Ukrainians a little closer to the democratic ideal, the rule of law and respect for human rights.

: The EU works closely with it's new neighbours, and not just on border security, but a wealth of training, cooperation and aid to help bring Ukraine and others into line with European standards and practices in all areas of law, commerce, media, banking, human rights etc.

: Then there's Nato forging links with the Ukrainian forces to help stabilise the region and bring security.

: The individual European governments also fund different initiatives in the field of better cultural understanding, for intance the British Council.

: And the thousands of little charities throughout the West who help the victims of Chernobyl and Ukrainian orphans.

: I have'nt even started on what the Americans and other nations do for UKraine.

: There is a population decline in Ukraine despite the influx of ethnic Ukrainians from other parts of the FSU and Tartars returning to Crimea. This net decline has little to do with the exit of MOB women, but more because of the social, economic and health issues in Ukraine today. Few people in Ukraine today can afford to have children. The men have a life expectancy of just 58 years.

: BTW they make thier own plastic packaging and export some.

thanks for that very full and clear, sensible post , yes I know about the life expectancy, sad, harder to be poor in a cold climate than a warm one
you know, I have cruised remote Pacific islands and seen people living in grass shelters, but they are happy and long lived, warm, fish, sun, and very little of the aid from AU, NZ gets through.
