I just came back from a short stay in Kiev. You do not provide enough information about you and your wife to determine what your employment and general prospects are. I CAN tell you that it is a "wide open" economy and you WILL be able to find something if you have a little initiative and street smarts. At the very least you might be able to tutor English. If you are able to bring some money with you, say $25 to $50K then you will be able to purchase an apartment (or buy a house depending on where you want to live) and after that your expenses will be small. How well you do depends on your personal standards.

Good luck!

p.s. Just so you know, it's not so bad: I am not Ukraininan or Russian and I HAVE a choice and I am seriously considering moving to Kiev.
