Hi Darin,

Yes, Lucky Net has a line with 56K access, though I have never been able to connect at higher than 36K on that line and I *do* have a 56k modem on my end. Not sure why, but I suspect it is because the line where my call originates is not the clearest. BTW - this LuckyNet node also supports ISDN - if you happen to have and ISDN modem. IPTELECOM also supports 56K.

: : Hi Darin,

: : First off - which ISP do you plan to use? Kyiv has several reliable ISP's that you can connect to. I use Lucky Net since much of their sign-up documentation is in English and easier for me than Russian. You mention AOL and Mindspring - do you know if they have local nodes in Kyiv (or whichever city you are travelling to)?? Normally when I travel overseas, I use AT&T WorldNet service, but they do not have a local node in Kyiv, hence, my reason for using Lucky Net.

: : Yes, there are sometimes noisy lines and dropped connections. It seems to be largely a matter of the phone where you originate your call. Telephones in the 228 exchange in Kyiv seem to have the best overall reliability for both LuckyNet and for IPTelecom ISPs.

: : As for the dial-tone, there is a setting in your Dial-up Networking setting (assuming you are using Windows 95/98) that allows you to tell the system to ignore dial tone and begin dialing anyway.

: : If you are trying to connect from an apartment where the telephone is wired without a RJ-45 connector, you will need to re-wire it - or simply pass on calling from this location till you can find another. My experience with private apartments is that about half of them are equipped with a more modern RJ-45 connector and the other half are hard-wired.

: : Finally, you can use AT&T Calling Cards (dial 8, 10011) and MCI/Worldcom cards (dial 8, 10013) that I know of. There may be others as well.

: : I hope this helps.

: Dan,
: Thanks. I currently use AOL. I was going to add Mindspring as well. Both Mindspring and AOL have access in L'viv, Kyiv, Odesa, and Kharkiv. There are some other cities as well, but I can't remember off the top of my head. I will check into LuckyNet too. Do they have 56k access? I would really like to use www.dialpad.com to make calls back to the USA.
: I have an MCI card, but I wondered if there were a cheaper alternative.

: Thanks for you help,

: Darin
