This is an interesting thread that has been expanding and contracting since YKPAIHA's independance...

I was in Truskavets' (Santorium capital in Halychyna) this last Monday-Wednesday visiting a relative who was there for medicinal reasons and I had to stay in the local hotel.

I thought of staying with B&B situation but opted for the state run Hotel Truskavets'.

This is a 1960s style 10 floor hotel that is so neglected that I can't remember being in a place where open sewers were visible in the bathroom...

Going price was 44hryv for 2 people. I was fearing that the price would be in line with what foriegners would be overcharged but that was not the case. I showed our 2 OZ passports - the concierge was more interested in where my visa was
and gave me the price which YKPAIHIAHs would pay...

However, really I was prepared to pay up to $40 (say similar to Motel 6 in the US) for appropiate comforts - of which there were none.

The tourist industry has to develop to serve...

As to the bloke who wouldn't pay that amount to take his YKPAIHIAH wife for a cruise... Obviously your a cheap bastard and don't value what she is worth to you...

Had you an hAmerikan or a Pommy wife she would have taken a 1st class trip to DisneyWorld and you would have taken a big swallow and then smiled nicely.

ThankYou&DriveThru

: To all you guys.

: I can say that double prices in hotels are under the law. You can complain about it in every case. Just the problem is that officials so far don't pay too much attention to this as they still don't ave any punishment regulation against it (that is from the conversation with deputy of Tourism Comettee, the same as other problems...). The prices are high because of taxes. This issue is also lobbied by many hotel owners and especially old hotel complexes, because they cannot make lower prices (like private hotels surely hide some part of income for development).
: Taxies: of course they make own price - why not to earn more?! If nobody would pay this price - they would make it less. But people - foreigners - pay, so... To avoid such prices - you can take a bus also to the city and then to take a car within the city and it will be much cheaper, depending on the rout of course.

: Maybe you don't want to believe this but we (locals) also struggle for lower taxes and prices and to make our country more civilized.

: By the way - with this average salary - locals don't live in the hotel. Among those who earns 300 grivna (58 dollars) it is hard to find one who ever stayed in the hotel in his life or ever had been on vacation (what you used to call vacations) and 99,9% of them never took the plane in their life, only maybe when they were young and had a chance to travel on soviet rates on soviet flights.

: I'm not trying to argue with you - yu are completely right, just please understand that not everything depends on people. I kept hope for elections can change something. I underestimated today president's power and attitudes. Now I keep small hope for presidential elections. Very small.

:
: : Chervona Ruta may be as much the victim as you are. There is probably serious political pressure to keep the rates low for the locals and free for certain select people. These ships were once government owned assets that mysteriously fell into the hands of Kiev's former mayor (the crook was named Zgurska) and some of his henchmen. None of the big wigs complained too much because they let all of them and their families travel for free. That $370 rate your wife got is probably quite negotiable, depending on how much political pull she can muster. If Chervona Ruta doesn't play the game, it losses its docking rights, the Tax Administration guy starts to come on a regular basis, etc. It's Ukraine man. Get used to it.
