I am not sure about European countries, but you should be sure to have your passport stamped at the local militsia (police). I was there with my wife in December 2000 to take care of some family business for her. When I was at Boryspil to go home, I got stopped by one of the airport guards and I had not had my passport stamped. I had to fill out paperwork at the police station there, and pay a $550 hryvna fine (about $100 USD). I am from the U.S., and I don't know if they still do this, but I suspect they do. They probably randomly select people that look like foreigners with money.

: Hello!

: I've never before traveled to the Ukraine, but I am planning to go to Simferopol at the end of June 2002 to visit my girlfriend (whom I've already met in Sweden twice in the past year). So...I have a couple of questions for all you experts out there:

: 1) My girlfriend says that I can stay at her parent's house with her. In this case, is a private visa the best choice for me? What, EXACTLY, is currently needed to obtain such a visa?

: 2) The Ukrainian Embassy website has some conflicting information on the visa requirements page:

: Under the section: "TO OBTAIN A VISA AN APLICANT MUST SUBMIT", it states in red that an official letter of invitation is no longer necessary,

: BUT, underneath this statement in the section: "Private visa", it states: "for a home stay visit - only original invitation issued in the applicant's name by a local Visas Permits and Passports Department Office (VVIR) of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine where the sponsor permanently resides"

: So, is a letter still needed???

: 3) I've read that both the VVIR registration and mandatory medical insurance is no longer necessary, are these both true?

: Thanks in Advance!

: -Brook
