I haven't been to Zaporizhzhya myself, but I understand it is a reasonably sized city. I doubt if you will have any problems at all with shortages of things there.
At the risk of sounding a bit gruesome, yes - your description of a 'shelf' is about accurate. More specifically, the outlet of the toilet (where the plumbing runs) is towards the front of the toilet. Here in the west, usually this is in the rear of the toilet. The shelf idea means that waste will be deposited on the shelf and remain there until you pull the flusher. [Apologies to the board for the details].
You are picking a really unusual destination to make your 'virgin' voyage - but one I think you will find truly rewarding. Ukraine is an enormously interesting country with a diverse population and a rich history. Treat the people with the respect they deserve and it will come back to you ten-fold in warmth and hospitality.
If you have any other questions, just ask.
: Thanks so much for your help Dan!
: Sorry I forgot to reference where I'll be staying... I'll be at a friend's apartment in Zaporizhzhya. From what I understand about the city, the island in the Dniper has some fun things to do as well.
: When you mentioned German toilets, does that mean that the bowl has a "shelf" in it? I saw a picture of one once. Forgive me, but I've never been outside the USA!
: Anyway, thanks again for your help!
