Hi Philip,
If you
(1) do feel like trying doing your business in Ukraine
(2) do have some connection in IT circles here in US

you might consider starting up an outsourcing company. As far as I know, the sector is booming in Kiev, Kharkov, Lviv (in Russia, too). In part this is thanks to cost-cutting efforts here in US.

If you manage to find customers in US - finding sw engineers in Ukraine is not much of a problem, same with equipment. I guess "mafia" is not gonna be your major concern, tax people and other burocrats are. Again, Kyiv is better from this perspective.

I am not much of an insider - you will need to find more competent people to talk about the issue. Ukrainians like to give advises. This is a great advantage.

: Thanks for your reply. Plan to live in Kyiv if possible, we want to buy an apartment there. I already know a few words of Russian, learning Ukrainian would be difficult for me but I plan to if necessary. I am in Information Technology. As far as the inconveniences, like power outages, etc., I am aware of this (have been there twice, and my wife told me about it anyway). As far as paying more, I plan to keep my mouth shut and let my wife do the talking :)

: : Phillip,

: : Where do you plan on living? If you are going to live in the bigger cities like Kyiv or Lviv you will have a better time acclimating to Ukraine. It will be easier for you to find a job there. As far as finding a job, that depends on your line of work.

: : It will help if you know the Ukrainian language, this will take you a long way in Ukraine.

: : Be prepared for some minor inconveniances living in Ukraine such as regular power outages and having your heating shut off at certain times. Also be prepared to pay about two to three times more for anything that a Ukrainian would pay for, this a proven fact that non-ukrainians pay more.
