: I am visit a friend of mine in Kyiv right now. We are planning a trip to Yalta. As far as I know this means that we either fly or take a train from Kyiv to Simferopol and arrange other transportation from there.

: My friend is telling me that the train ride is "uncomforatable". (This is her choice of English english words. Needless to say, she is Ukrainian.)

: My question to the board is, assuming that I buy a ticket in one of the better classes on the train such as a 2 or 4 berth compartment, what is the condition of the train ride?

: By the way, my working assumption is that she is really telling me that she really wants to fly rather take the train.

: I had been looking forward to taking the train because I do not do this often. However, it is hard to argue with an 18 hour train ride.

Just take the train - it's much more intersting than flying, and you'll see much of Ukraine if you take the train..

I've never had any bad experiences - the trains are quite comfortable, and it's no problem for me to sleep on the train. 16-18 hours is not a long trip in Europe's second biggest country.

You'll get a pleasant trip if you just avoid the trains, which are classified as "passazhirsky". "Skory" trains are not especially good or bad. "Firmenny" trains are the best.

The best firmenny train (train number 012K) departs daily from Kiev Pass. 17:13,
and arrives in Simferopol pass. 09:15 next day. The travel time is 16h02min.

Another possibility is the daily skory train 28K, departure from Kiev Pass. 19:45,
arr. Simferopol Pass 13:36 next day. The travel time is 15h50min

The fare in a good 4-berth sleeping compartment Kiev-Simferopol is US$10-15. The plane fare is about $60-100, so you save a lot of money if you take train (and I would definitely do this).
