I was sitting next to the window that faces downtown Manhattan, when I heard a very loud boom. I dismissed it as just another truck's exhaust. A moment later my husband calls to tell me that a plane has crashed into the World Trade Center. How can that be? - I asked myself. In broad daylight - was the pilot blind? Suddenly another blast. I ran to the balcony and saw the smoke billowing from downtown. residents with a better view than mine pointed to the smoke. The TV stations were one by one going off the air, and only CBS still broadcasting. The news was devastating - first one airplane, then another hitting the second tower.
As I watched the horror on television, yet another blast boomed in the air. This time, one of the towers collapsed. Moments later, the second one fell.
New Yorkers are dumbfounded. Children are returning from school in tears.
Yet the rest of the world goes on as if nothing happened. Those who neither heard nor felt the blasts go about their business as usual. The maintenance workers in my apartment complex continue to mow the lawns and pile up trash bags for the sanitation workers.
I doubt the sanitation trucks will be coming to collect the trash any time soon - they will be too busy disposing of the rubble that was once the World Trade Center.
