If you want to get a good sense of a place, go shopping, I always say!
Looking in furniture stores is very interesting in Ukraine. They have the most fabulous space saving arrangements, for kitchens and living rooms. Not to everyone's taste, but, still interesting. When you look in furniture stores in a foreign country, it gives you a sense of how people live, I think.
