Rabotyaga, Taras Schevchenko was strictly prohibited by Russian secret police to write in Ukrainian, paint or draw. He had no choice but to write in Russian. Yes, Brulov and the St.Petersburg artists raised money to buy him out, but that was a gesture against despotism of Royal family and autocracy of Russia rather than celebration of Greater Russia. As you know, many artists were not Russian at all, they came from Europe during times since Peter's reforms.
As of other great Ukrainian writers: Skovoroda, Kotlyarevsky, Lesya Ukrainka, Franko, Hohol, Vinnichenko, Grushevsky. The list can be long , we have not even scratched the surface. Best Hohol's novels are "Taras Bulba", "Vechori..", and "Hetman". "Dead souls" were he wrote about Russia and its ways brought Gogol to mantal illness and his death bed.
As of Ukrainian inventors, since 1700's most promissing Ukrainians were requested to Moscow, Ukraine suffered a great deal of talant theft. How are we going to judge who is Ukrainian among inventors? By last name, nationality, citizenship? langiage? As of the nukes from Russia, I doubt Russia will ever considere "giving " them to Ukraine. Nukes were a great liability for Ukraine, and they are for Russia. Do you think, when Russians deployed in Pristina and took control of the airfield it was heroism? It was lunacy. Russia got humiliated again. Russia strived for a "zone of control" but got "participation in the peace keeping", so did Ukraine. Ukraine did not have to humiliate itself as Russia did.
Mazepa and Petro I, may be Petro was not such a good student after all? Learning from the great is a two way street.
International venture "SeaLaunch" is using Ukrainian made rockets not Russian. You may say its Russian, it was build in the Soviet Union. How about tanks (T-86's) Ukraine makes and sells right now? Are they Russian too? Antonov aircraft factory it is Ukrainian now.
Suvorov took Izmail, who were his most skilled soldiers? Cossacks of the Black Sea Stronghold (Sich).
Ukrainian population has been Russified since 1654. Many people do not know their history, literature, heritage and culture. Population of Odesa sings Ukrainian songs , not Russian. Even though, they may toast in "surgik". Ukrainian language is more melodious than Russian - no contest. I do not think, we should forget Russian, I do think Ukrainian should get a priority of the stae and special attention. Its investment in the future of Ukraine.
As of difference in languages, during Pereyaslavl Treaty, both sides brough interpreters to the table. I am not going to go into reasons why wimpy Tsar Alexy sent his Boyar instead of him to patch the deal. Enigma of Pereyaslav Treaty is a whole separate issue.
Vlasov army...I do not think that UPA was less skilled than Vlasovtsy. MVD and NKVD forces of Poland, USSR and Czechoslovakia combined fought UPA until 1954. Even operation "Visla" with its "scorched earth" in 1944 tactic did not destroy the movement in its root but destroy a great deal of Ukrainian villages in Western Ukraine. Ukrainians also had SS "Galicia" and "Roland", they were well organized and trained. I think, the issue of who was "better" is quite argumentative. I would not make fun of Zaporozhian cossacks because, for the record, they did beat Russian Army at Konotop. They beat Poles more times than they lost to them. Zaporozhtsi were the best worriers of its time. Its legacy is vary valuable for Ukrainian youth.
Bulgakov was a product of Imperial Russia, he was not a Ukrainian in his heart. His book "White Guard" is a testimony to it. He disliked Petlura, however he never knew the man and his vision of Ukraine.
That is why it is important to bring young population of Ukraine with new values. Ukrainian will come back into most of the homes in Ukraine.
I think Russian supremacy themes are things of the past. Russians are having serious problems with national identity and natioanl pride. Chechnya is another humiliation for Russians. If you look who owns many businesses in Moscow-Chechens. Moscovites are in horror from those people. Noone challenges those men on the street. Is that cool?
Do you see Ukraine as a miniature copy of Russia?
As of Crimea and Chornovil...Crimea is a hotbath of Russian nationalism, since 1930's retired military personnel settled in Crimea. It is Crimean voting base. Life in Crimea is even worse than in the rest of Ukraine. But Russians liked to go there because Sochi is even worse.
Which way are we looking Rabotyaga?
Are you ready to forget starvation of 1932-1933?
I can't.
We have to come to terms with past, but we have to build the future.
I can forgive them some, but I will not forget.
If you look into surrounding countries, noone likes Russians. Ukrainians have more grief from Russian friendship then anyone else. Should we love them for all that?
