What "rabotiaga" didn't tell you in his comment that Ukrainian language was not tolerated during "prosperous" Soviet times. When you spoke Ukrainian in mostly Russian speaking areas of the country you can feel unfriendly attitute to you. Comments like "ya etogo banderovskogo yazyka nie ponimayu" were common. Also you were subject to different kinds of jokes, suspition, etc.
Without such people as Bandera, Konovalets, Melnyk, Mazepa, Khmelnytskyi and many others Ukraine would be dead by now.
Ukrainian is my native language and I am telling you this from my personal experience.
Takozh hochu skazaty, shcho na Ukraini zavzhdy bulo mistse dlia rosiys'koyi movy ale ne dlia ukrains'koyi. Yakshcho vy, "russkoyazychnyye", navchytesia shche odniyeyi movy, tse bude til'ky koryst' dlia vas. Chy ne tak?
