: Ukraine Gives Four Helicopters to Macedonian Army
: KIEV, Mar 20, 2001 -- (Reuters) Ukraine's defense ministry said on Tuesday it had handed four of its military transport helicopters to the Macedonian armed forces, which are battling ethnic Albanian rebels.
: Macedonia's poorly equipped army has been fighting rebels based in steep hills on the edge of the village of Tetovo, but Kiev denied they were sending Macedonia the helicopters because of the hostilities.
: "The helicopters are now in Macedonia. They will either be sold or leased, a final decision has not been made on that. But they will stay there," said a defense ministry spokesman. "There is no link to the fighting, this is an old agreement."
: The Soviet-designed Mi-8 helicopters are principally used to transport troops in former Soviet states. Ukraine enjoys good relations with Macedonia and the two countries have signed military cooperation agreements.
: The defense ministry said the helicopters were being sold as part of an agreement reached before the fighting around Tetovo broke out, and came after the aircraft had finished a tour of duty in neighboring Kosovo.
: Mi-8 helicopters have recently suffered a series of accidents. Two crashed in Ukraine and Russia on Monday, killing a total of 11 people. The accidents came just a month after another Mi-8 plummeted in Kazakhstan, killing six.
